Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese

Down an ally off a main street is "Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese." It is a restaurant and pub and has the best fish and chips I have ever eaten. I wouldn't have known it was there if someone who had been living in London for the last year hadn't told me about it. It was "re-built" in 1667, presumably was there for some time before its re-building, and has been there ever since. The interior was dimly lit and the floor and walls were old wood that by the looks of it had been repaired and revarnished several times. One of the first things i noted about the place was that there was wood chippings and sawdust all over the floor. My first thought was construction. But when i asked my waitress, she said it was traditional to put the wood chips down every morning because in the old days men used to spit their chew out onto the floor. So naturally, they put on a thick layer of sawdust to absorb it all.
